Movie of the Month: The Last Picture Show. This one surprised the hell out of me. A real highlight from this year’s project. Deserves to be mentioned among the best of the 70s.

Dud of the Month: Hellbound: Hellraiser II. I wanted to like this one, but it became a nonsensical mess about halfway through. Too bad.

How about you guys? Did you see anything amazing this month? What’s your favorite out of the ones listed above?

  1. Looks like you had a great month in terms of movie watching!
Bogdanovich sure put together some gems in the early 70s: The Last Picture Show (1971), Paper Moon (1973) and What’s Up, Doc? (1972) . Too bad his career came off the rails and faded into obscurity after that, Mask (1985) I believe is his last hit.

The Lost Weekend [1945], Bonjour Tristesse has a review up this week…

    • Unfortunately, I think The Last Picture Show is the only Bogdanovich film I have seen. Before seeing that, I had only known of him for his role on The Sopranos. So yeah, definitely have a lot of catching up to do!

Thanks for the heads up on BT’s review. Will be sure to check it out.

    • Goon is decent. It has some similarities to Slap Shot but it’s a cut below, in my opinion. I’d say it’s worth a rental, but don’t go into it expecting too much.

  2. Hellraiser is one gross movie. My fav from the ones listed is Prometheus which is also the best movie I saw in June. We need to talk about Kevin is close, though, what a performance by Tilda Swinton!

    • Haha yeah, Hellraiser is pretty nuts. I think the sequel has it beat in terms of grossness, though. Prometheus and We Need to Talk About Kevin were definitely in contention for my favorites of the month. Really enjoyed both, although perhaps “enjoyed” is not the right word for Kevin. :)

  3. There are tons of great ones on that list. I’m very fond of Lost Weekend, but my favorite is A Fistful of Dollars. Those Eastwood/Leone films are some of the most fun movies ever made.

  4. Quite a few great movies Eric !! What did you think of Hunger ?? It’s one of those movies I really love but doubt if I’ll ever watch it again, requiem for a dream being another. Serpico and The Lost Weekend are great too.

    • Thanks SDG! I liked Hunger quite a bit, but yeah, it’s not something I would probably want to watch again anytime soon. I thought Serpico and The Lost Weekend were pretty great as well — can’t believe it took me this long to watch both of them.

    • Thanks Jaina. I had a similar reaction to Submarine, and it was better than I expected. Kind of reminded me of a Wes Anderson film. Definitely one of last year’s more overlooked movies.

  5. Frigging awesome month! Some of my favourite films of 2011 on there: Submarine, Tyrannosaur, We Need to Talk About Kevin. Also Req for a Dream is one of my top 10. Prometheus was probably best I saw this month.

    • Hi Betsy, thanks for commenting! I was really surprised with Best in Show. The actual dog show was hilarious, especially with Fred Willard’s commentary. I haven’t heard of My Afternoons with Margueritte — I’ll have to look it up!

  6. Last Picture Show, Alien, and Requiem are my favorite movies you watched last month. Moonrise Kingdom might be a new favorite. As for the ones you saw and I want to see right away…Beasts of the Southern Wild and Ted.

    • I still can’t get over The Last Picture Show. Amazing film.

I hope you’re able to see Beasts of the Southern Wild soon. Would love to hear your thoughts on it.

  7. Great month, man! You always have such an eclectic selections, I admire you for that. Lots I want to see here, especially Rushmore, Moonrise Kingdom (hopefully soon) and Beasts of the Southern Wild.
